U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday announced an end to a COVID-19 lockdown in the country, introducing new measures that would take effect when the lockdown ends on Dec. 2.

Johnson said the United Kingdom would return to a tiered system, but with tougher restrictions in place.

Johnson also expressed optimism about results released by AstraZeneca about its COVID-19 vaccine, developed along with the University of Oxford.

The drugmaker said Monday that late-stage trials showed the vaccine was up to 90 per cent effective.

Johnson said that with the promising news from drugmakers like AstraZeneca, the challenge is “to fight down any over-optimism.” He encouraged people to continue to follow health guidance as the country enters what he said would be a “difficult winter.”
