U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Saturday announced a new 28-day lockdown for England as COVID-19 cases continue to rise across the country that will see the closures of pubs, restaurants and non-essential businesses, though take-out businesses can remain open.

Johnson made the announcement during a briefing where he was joined by the U.K.'s chief scientific officer Sir Patrick Vallance and England's chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty.

Vallance warned during the briefing that the second wave of coronavirus could be twice as bad as the first seen in the spring, saying there was the possibility for the fatality rate to reach the same rate of daily deaths seen in April when the virus was at its peak.

Johnson said schools, colleges and universities would remain open and he urged parents to continue to send their children to school.

The prime minister also stressed people should remain home unless they are going out for school, for work if it cannot be done at home, for exercise and recreation outdoors, for medical reasons, to shop for food and essentials or to care for others.
