Boris Johnson has told the House of Commons there is no alternative to the four-week lockdown in England.

Some Conservative MPs are strongly opposed to the measure, saying it's not justified and will cause immense damage to the economy.

In the Commons the prime minister said he regretted the anguish the restrictions would cause but that he was left with no alternative.

A new 5-level system of restrictions has come into effect in Scotland. No part of Scotland has been placed in the highest tier.

The Central Belt including Glasgow and Edinburgh will be in Level 3 of the new system with pubs and restaurants closing at 6pm and no alcohol sold. The Highlands and many of the island communities will be in Tier 1 with more relaxed rules.

In Wales the two-week firebreak lockdown will be lifted. Two households will be allowed to form a bubble and mix together, but travel across the border to England will not be allowed without a reasonable excuse because of the English lockdown.

Huw Edwards presents BBC News at Ten reporting by political editor Laura Kuenssberg, Scotland editor Sarah Smith and Wales correspondent Hywel Griffith.
