British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Monday the gradual reopening of the country will begin on Monday, April 12 with the reopening of shops, gyms, zoos, holiday campsites, personal care services like hairdressers, outdoor hospitality of all kinds and big gardens.

Step 2 of the United Kingdom's COVID-19 roadmap will also include the increase in numbers of visitors to long-term care homes from one to two visitors.

Johnson said Step 3 will be introduced on May 17.

Routine coronavirus tests will be available starting Friday for people as a way to stamp out new outbreaks as restrictions begin to loosen up.

The prime minister discussed the possibility of issuing vaccine passports, saying they will not be required from people next Monday, or on May 17, but it's an option to look into for international travel.

More than 31 million people have been vaccinated in the U.K. to date.
