U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced his government's plan Monday to bring the country out of lockdown with a phased reopening.

The country has been under lockdown since Jan. 4, after a new, highly-contagious variant of the coronavirus was found inside parts of England.

Under the new plan, schools are expected to reopen across England on March 8 with limited return of outdoor social interaction.

Retail stores will reportedly be permitted to reopen April 12, with indoor entertainment allowed to resume May 17.

Johnson also announced that further restrictions on social interactions will be lifted as of March 29, when schools take a break for Easter holiday.

The prime minister said the aim is that starting June 21, the government could remove all legal limits on social contact for weddings and other live events.
