British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday discussed Pfizer’s work on a novel coronavirus vaccine, which data suggests is 90 per cent effective, saying that the U.K. has secured a large proportion of its doses.

Johnson stressed the government will still need to see the full safety data and that it needs to be peer reviewed as well. He added that people must “wait and see whether this vaccine lives up to its promise,” and that it’s “not necessarily a home run yet.”

Johnson also said the U.K. has secured 300 million doses from five other candidates.

He cautioned against slackening off in the battle to protect people against the disease saying that would be a big mistake.

In England the death toll has risen to an average of 300 a day, double what it was 24 days ago, and the number of people admitted to hospital is also on the increase.
