Alberta's chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw said Tuesday that the province would begin offering a fourth COVID-19 dose to those who are immunocompromised. She said starting Jan. 20, booking opportunities will open for people who received their third dose at least five months ago in September 2021.

The announcement came as the province reported 3,279 new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours. Hinshaw said there were also 1,089 in hospital, including 104 in the ICU. She also advised among those hospitalized, 51 per cent of admissions to non-ICU spaces were due to COVID-19, while in 49 per cent of cases COVID-19 was determined not to be a cause of admission or could not be confirmed as the cause. She also reported 9 new deaths.

Hinshaw also advised that outbreak data on congregate living facilities, such as correctional facilities and shelters, will once again be listed in outbreak information provided by the province.
