Deputy Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Howard Njoo said on Thursday that all Canadians who wish to receive a second dose of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine will be able to, following many provinces pausing first doses of this vaccine due to concerns over blood clots.

He also said there's a possibility that mixing vaccine types might lead to a greater immune response, but clinical trials in the U.K. are currently examining this.

Maj.-Gen. Dany Fortin also provided an update on Canada's upcoming vaccine shipments and supply.

Canada's federal government faces pressure from the provinces to release guidance on the safety and efficacy of vaccine mixing amid these supply shortages.

Njoo said if a different vaccine is used for a second dose, it’s possible there could be a greater immune response.

Currently, the U.K. is conducting clinical trials looking at using different vaccine combinations for first and second doses.
