Alberta joins other provinces in delaying period between COVID-19 vaccine doses| FULL

Alberta chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw announced Wednesday that the province will follow the recommendation of the National Advisory Committee on Immunization and delay the period between the first and second COVID-19 vaccine doses.

Hinshaw says the goal is "providing first doses to all Albertans as soon as possible."

Starting on March 10, anyone who books an appointment to receive their first dose of the vaccine will have the second dose timeline extended four months. According to Hinshaw, those who have already booked their appointment for the second dose "will go ahead as scheduled."

Anyone who books before March 10 will still be able to book a second appointment within the 42-day window.

Hinshaw said the province has administered approximately 255,280 doses of vaccine to date with more the 89,000 Albertans fully vaccinated.

Alberta has also recorded the first continuing care outbreak containing a COVID-19 variant. The outbreak was identified on Friday at Churchill Manor in Edmonton as a single case. By Wednesday, 27 staff and residents had tested positive, including 19 confirmed variant cases.

"Local public health teams and the operator are taking this outbreak very seriously and are working together to limit spread and protect everyone involved," Hinshaw said.
