Mayor John Tory and the city's chief medical officer of health Dr. Eileen de Villa provided an update on the ongoing response to the pandemic on Wednesday, urging residents to only celebrate with their own households as the holidays approach.

When asked about the possibility of increased COVID-19 testing ahead of the holidays, Toronto’s medical officer of health Dr. Eileen de Villa said individuals seeking testing to socialize outside of their household should “really think twice" about doing so.

Dr. de Villa said residents should recognize that "what's best for their own health" and the health of the community "is really to stay home as much as possible."

Tory and Dr. de Villa also reacted to news of the approval of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, with Dr. de Villa calling it “wonderful news,” and stating it adds “one more tool to our toolkit to fight COVID-19.”

Ontario reported 2,408 new cases of the novel coronavirus Wednesday, with 629 cases reported in Toronto.
