Toronto’s medical officer of health Dr. Eileen de Villa introduced new workplace restrictions aimed at limiting the spread of COVID-19 during an update on the city’s response to the pandemic.

Employers are now required to “immediately notify” Toronto Public Health if two or more employees are infected with COVID-19, and designate a point-person to be in contact with health officials.

Businesses are also required to minimize situations where more than one person is traveling in an employer vehicle, implement “rigorous and frequent cleaning” in high-touch areas and areas open to the public, and ensure physical distancing of at least two metres is enforced“ wherever possible.”

Toronto Public Health, she said, will also add “more specificity” about workplace-related outbreaks across eleven categories, including pharmacies, grocery stores, food-processing sites, construction, offices, warehouses, shipping and distribution and manufacturing facilities.

The city reported 974 new cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, on Monday and nine new deaths. Since Dec. 30, she said, there have been 3,061 new cases of COVID-19 in Toronto.
