Albertans will be able to go to the gym and eat in a restaurant again starting Feb. 8 after Premier Jason Kenney announced several COVID-19 restrictions will be lifted.

The businesses in question will be expected to adhere to strict occupancy limits and other health restrictions.

Group or team sports are still not permitted at this time.

On Jan. 7, Kenney said businesses would be given at least a week’s notice before they’d be allowed to reopen so they’d have time to plan. At the time, he said restrictions would be in place until at least Jan. 21.

While the ban on outdoor gatherings and personal wellness services were lifted on Jan. 14, no changes were made for other industries.

Kenney laid out a four-step approach to easing public health measures currently in place. Each step is based on COVID-19 hospitalizations, and changes to restrictions will be considered once a benchmark is reached.

The benchmarks laid out by the province are:

Step 1 – 600 hospitalizations and declining

Step 2 – 450 hospitalizations and declining

Step 3 – 300 hospitalizations and declining

Step 4 – 150 hospitalizations and declining

With hospitalizations dipping below 600, Alberta will move to Step 1 on Feb. 8.
