Canada's chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam said Wednesday that while the country, like others globally face "limited supplies" of monkeypox vaccine, so far they feel they will still be able to vaccinate those who come for an inoculation.

She did stress, however, that high-risk populations need to get their shot to protect themselves and others. Tam also added people should prepare if they need a second dose of the vaccine.

Tam said that there had been 745 total confirmed cases of monkeypox in the country as of July 26, with the majority in Quebec and Ontario. She added there had been cases reported in B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and the Yukon.

Since July 1, cases have been doubling to date, and the first case in a female was detected.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared that the global monkeypox outbreak represents a public health emergency of international concern.
