Federal Justice Minister and Attorney General of Canada David Lametti announced nearly $9.5 million in funding on Monday for 21 Indigenous-led projects aimed at developing governance laws “based on traditional Indigenous justice and normative symptoms, revitalizing traditional laws and developing legal education materials for Indigenous communities."

Lametti made the announcement alongside Indigenous Services Minister Marc Miller and Carolyn Bennett, minister of Crown-Indigenous relations.

The cash-injection is in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s final report in 2015, which offered a detailed account of what happened to Indigenous children at government boarding schools, where at least 3,200 children died amid abuse and neglect.

The report published 94 calls to action urging all levels of government to change policies and programs to repair harm caused by residential schools and move forward with reconciliation.
