Canada’s Minister of Health Jean-Yves Duclos and Minister for Women, Gender Equality and Youth Marci Ien announced funding on Wednesday that will see more than $3.5 million provided to two organizations to enhance access to abortion services for people in the country. The funding will allow for the organizations to provide training to health-care providers to perform abortions, and provide support for people who need to travel to access services.
As the United States faces turmoil over the possible overturning of Roe v. Wade, an online poll by Leger and the Association for Canadian Studies showed that approximately four in five respondents said they are in favour of a woman’s right to an abortion if she so chooses.
Seventy per cent of all respondents said they were concerned about the leaked plan to overturn Roe v. Wade, and almost half said they think the situation in the U.S. on the right to an abortion may have an effect in Canada.
Asked how they would handle Americans who may be unvaccinated for COVID-19, due to current border restrictions, trying to access services in Canada, Ien said that while she would not "deal in hypotheticals," if unvaccinated Americans try to access abortion services in Canada, the government would approach it in an "empathetic way."
