Alberta is pausing its plan to further lift COVID-19 restrictions for six weeks, chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw announced on Friday, adding she's been monitoring local and international data on the pandemic.

Currently isolation requirements, testing and provincial masking mandates remain in place.

Plus, Hinshaw and Education Minister Adriana LaGrange provided an update on back-to-school guidance and the ongoing work to protect public health in schools.

Masks won’t be mandatory in Alberta schools this fall, but students and staff will still have to isolate if they test positive for COVID-19 or are symtomatic.

Alberta has now released both a back-to-school tool kit for parents and school staff, and also a document outlining guidelines for how to go about managing and preventing respiratory illness in schools.

The province says students and staff should continue daily screening for COVID-19 symptoms using the Alberta Health Daily Checklist, and students and school staff must isolate if they test positive for COVID-19 or begin showing the “core” COVID-19 symptoms.
