Alberta Health Minister Tyler Shandro and chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw took time Tuesday to clarify the rules surrounding fitness facilities and the Step 2 re-opening.
On Monday, the province eased restrictions for indoor fitness facilities. The new rules mean group classes like yoga, Pilates and dance can be held by appointment or pre-registration only. Physical distancing must be in place. Weightlifting and low-intensity use of treadmills and ellipticals will also be allowed.
The only circumstance where high-intensity activities are permitted in gyms will be one-on-one with a trainer.
However, some gym owners were concerned that the new rules were confusing.
Earlier on Tuesday, the health minister clarified the difference between low-intensity and high-intensity activities. “If you’re out of breath, it’s high-intensity, if you’re not out of breath, it’s low-intensity.”
Explaining the reasoning behind the rules, Dr. Hinshaw said, “We heard from fitness industry representatives… how important it is for us to underline the critical role physical activity has in both physical and mental health.”
Hinshaw also stated that they looked at the B.C. model, which also uses the high- and low-intensity model, and that province’s COVID-19 numbers have been “relatively stable.”
