Former President Donald Trump said his Supreme Court picks are responsible for "killing" Roe v. Wade, which guaranteed the constitutional right to abortion, and now “states are working it out."
“I put three great Supreme Court justices on the court, and they happen to vote in favor of killing Roe v. Wade and moving it back to the states,” Trump said in the CNN Presidential Debate on Thursday.
“The states are working it out … they're all making their own decisions right now.”
Trump also said that the desire to return decisions about abortion law to the states 50 years after the Supreme Court ruled on Roe was universal and “everybody without exception” supported this. In fact many liberals and Democrats, including Trump’s opponent on the debate stage, decried the decision and have promised to enshrine abortion rights in federal law.
The June 27 CNN Presidential Debate was the first time President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump faced off this election season. It was also the first debate between a sitting and former president.
