Former President Donald Trump blamed former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for the Jan. 6 attack while President Joe Biden accused the former president of encouraging the attack and promising to pardon all who have been convicted for involvement in the insurrection.

Trump said he was aware there “was a lot of people coming” to his rally in Washington, and claimed that he offered to call in the National Guard for Pelosi and that the former speaker took responsibility for not preparing for Jan. 6.

“You could feel it and I said they ought to have some national guard or whatever, and I offered it to her. And she now admits that she turned them down,” Trump said.

Several news outlets have reported that this is not true, as Pelosi was referring to U.S. Capitol security and does not have the ability to decide if the National Guard is deployed.

Biden responded by accusing Trump of not stopping the Jan. 6 attack and of promising to pardon people who have been convicted for breaking the law during their participation.

“He says, he'll now forgive them for what they've done. … He says he wants to commute their sentences,” Biden said. Trump has said he would “consider” pardoning them.

The June 27 CNN Presidential Debate Simulcast is the first time Biden and Trump are facing off this election season. It is also the first time they have debated since 2020. This matchup will also be the first debate between a sitting and former president.
