Asked about potential foreign interference in the presidential election, President Donald Trump changed the subject to his opponent, Democratic nominee Joe Biden, to make unproven claims about Biden’s son Hunter. Biden disputed Trump's charges, saying he had not “taken a penny from any foreign source” in his life. Biden then pointed to a recent New York Times report that Trump maintains a bank account in China and that he paid nearly $200,000 in taxes there in recent years. During the second and final presidential debate at Belmont University in Nashville, Biden called on Trump to release his tax returns in order to provide more transparency on his business dealings, prompting his Republican opponent to claim that he “pre-paid” tens of millions of dollars in federal income taxes.

Although the president made a required payment to the IRS in 2016 and 2017 for income taxes he might owe, another recent New York Times investigation found that his tax liability was only $750 each year because his business losses were so significant. Trump linked special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation to his tax returns, but Mueller’s report aimed more broadly to detail possible connections between the Trump campaign and Russia's effort to interfere in the 2016 election.
