International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director-General Rafael Grossi spoke to reporters at the Vienna airport in Austria upon his return from Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant on Friday (3:24), saying that six experts will stay behind to continue the work while two staff members will establish a permanent presence on site.

Four of the six members will leave next week, with a report summarizing the findings on the Zaporizhzhia plant to be produced by that time.

“Frankly speaking, there are enough political players in this game,” Grossi said. “The nuclear watchdog has to remain what it is — the nuclear security, safety and non-proliferation watchdog, and it has to do its job to have its credibility.”

A team of UN experts arrived at Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia atomic plant complex on Thursday to assess the risk of a radiation disaster after being delayed several hours by shelling near the site. Russia and Ukraine have both accused each other of trying to sabotage the mission of the IAEA to the plant in southern central Ukraine, which is controlled by Russian forces but operated by Ukrainian staff.
