International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) director General Rafael Grossi called for more action on nuclear safety in Ukraine on Tuesday, saying that they "have a problem that we need to solve." Responding to a question about his past comments on potential complacency in nuclear safety, he added that it was a "collective complacency," but said he was optimistic something could be achieved.

His comments were part of a discussion about the organization's mission in Ukraine.

This comes as Russia said Tuesday that a joint plan by the United States, Britain and Australia to create a new fleet of nuclear-powered submarines raised questions about nuclear proliferation.

The leaders of the three countries on Monday announced details of the plan as part of their "AUKUS" partnership pact. It would provide Australia with nuclear-powered attack submarines from the early 2030s to counter China's ambitions in the Indo-Pacific.
