Video footage released by Reuters on Thursday showed a large explosion in Ukraine’s southern town of Enerhodar, about 5.5 km from the reactors of the Zaporizhzhia region's nuclear power plant, as a team of United Nations (UN) experts planned a safety inspection visit to the plant.

Russia and Ukraine accused each other of trying to sabotage the mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to the plant, which is controlled by Russian forces but operated by Ukrainian staff.

Despite the shelling, the mission set off to the inspection site as planned.

IAEA chief Rafael Grossi said the mission was aware of the high risk the "increased military activity in the area" between Ukrainian and Russian defence lines posed, but was pressing ahead with its plan to visit the facility and meet its staff.

Russian-installed officials have suggested that the team from the UN nuclear watchdog would have only a day to inspect the plant, while the mission is preparing for longer.
