International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi spoke before a United Nations (UN) Security Council meeting on Thursday on the safety of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear power plant in Ukraine. Grossi called for a team of experts from the IAEA to conduct a mission to the plant to evaluate its safety.

"The IAEA has been ready to perform such a mission since June when we were ready to go. But unfortunately, due to political factors and other considerations, it was not possible," Grossi told the council, adding that all military action around the plant needed to stop.

Russia's deputy United Nations (UN) ambassador Vasily Nebenzya said it fully supports a team of experts from the IAEA inspecting the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear plant in Ukraine. He added, however, that it is not up to them, claiming that Ukrainian Armed Forces are continually shelling the plant and surrounding areas.

Canada and other G7 nations have demanded Russian forces hand back control of Zaporizhzhia to Ukraine.

Russia seized Europe's largest nuclear power plant in March after invading Ukraine on Feb. 24. The plant is still run by its Ukrainian technicians.

Ukraine's Energoatom said the area was struck five times on Thursday, including near the site where radioactive materials are stored.
