Russia accused Ukraine of shelling its own Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant during a United Nations Security Council meeting on Tuesday.
Russia called the meeting to discuss the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) visit to the plant amid heightened tensions and multiple instances of the facility taking indirect fire.
The Russian representative claimed that information the Russian defence ministry has points the finger at Ukraine, which Russia claims has shelled the plant with American-made weapons on several occasions in August, resulting in damages to the plant and 2 casualties.
He said Russia is ready to present evidence to the United Nations and to the IAEA.
The Ukrainian representative rejected all accusations and called on Russia to withdraw its troops from the plant and establish a demilitarized zone around it, which Russia rejected as an “irresponsible” move.
The U.S. representative delivered remarks in which he warned of increased Russian attacks on Kyiv and Ukraine as Ukraine Independence Day approaches.
“The world is watching,” he said, adding “please don’t bomb schools” as he addressed the Russian representative.
