Prime Minister Justin Trudeau defended his trip to New York City as the strike by Canada's public servants continues, saying he has been "intimately involved" in the negotiations and has "deep faith" in collective bargaining. He also said their negotiators have been putting forward "serious" offers.

Earlier in the day, Trudeau delivered a keynote address to the Council on Foreign Relations, in which he spoke about the country's investment interests, pitching Canada as a viable critical minerals trade partner.

His media availability comes on the final day of the Global Citizen Now Summit where he discussed calls for Ottawa to help Haiti, as the head of the UN's mission there says the worsening political crisis and growing violence are signs of "unprecedented insecurity."

Asked if the deadline to get Canadians out of Sudan would need to be extended after a mechanical issue as well as chaos on the runway, Trudeau said he had been informed the issue for one plane had been resolved. He also said they were looking to continue flights out of Sudan "as quickly as possible," and said it's a combined effort of many countries and Canada would continue to play a role.
