Conservative and NDP MPs mocked Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s trip to New York, where he will attend an international summit championing human rights and sustainability. MPs accused him of “hobnobbing with celebrities” rather than dealing with a federal workers' strike that has seen more than 100,000 public servants walk off the job.

“Why doesn’t the prime minister turn his plane around, get back to Ottawa, do his job and get his government back to work?” Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre said during question period on Thursday.

The Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) strike entered its ninth day on Thursday, with workers continuing to demonstrate outside “strategic” government locations. The delivery of federal services continues to be impacted while workers remain on strike, as growing backlogs of immigration and passport applications are not being processed.

Treasury Board President Mona Fortier said the government continues to negotiate with PSAC and is working “day-in and day-out” to find “a reasonable deal for public servants that will be fair.”

Meanwhile, Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly sought to assure Canadians that efforts to evacuate Canadians from Sudan amid the crisis in that country were not impacted by the strike.
