Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned on Monday the acts of violence and vandalism that took place during large-scale protests against COVID-19 vaccine mandates over the weekend in Ottawa.

“I want to be very clear. We are not intimidated by those who hurl insults and abuse at small business workers and steal food from the homeless. We won't give in to those who fly racist flags.”

Speaking at a press conference after testing positive for COVID-19, Trudeau urged politicians who supported the protest to “think long and hard” about the consequences of their actions.

Over the weekend, a local Ottawa shelter, the Shepherds of Good Hope, confirmed some trucker convoy protesters harassed and pressured their workers, demanding meals for “several hours over the dinner period.”

There were also a number of hateful symbols spotted on Parliament Hill, including swastikas and Confederate battle flags.

A state of Terry Fox was also adorned with pro-trucker slogans, and Canada’s Defence Chief Gen. Wayne Eyre has condemned those protesters who parked on the National War Memorial or stood on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

When asked whether he would negotiate with protesters and discuss their demands, Trudeau said he has chosen not to “go anywhere” near those who express hateful rhetoric or violence.

Thousands descended on Parliament Hill over the weekend as part of the so-called “freedom convoy” protests, with no clear date for when they will leave.
