Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau invoked the never-before-used Emergencies Act on Monday, amid ongoing protests against COVID-19 restrictions across the country, notably in Ottawa.

He said the act would be used to “strengthen and support law enforcement agencies” as they respond to the protests.

The prime minister said he is triggering the act after discussions with his caucus, premiers and opposition leaders, adding that the move does not include calling in the military or overriding civil rights.

Trudeau also addressed the situation in Ukraine on Monday, stating that Canada would offer a loan of up to $500 million to that country amid growing fears of a Russian invasion. He said he’s also approved the provision of $7.8 million worth of weapons and ammunition.
