Trudeau government's use of Emergencies Act during trucker protests "unconstitutional": CCLA | FULL

The Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA) held a press conference on Wednesday concerning the Public Emergency Order Commission in Ottawa.

The CCLA called the Canadian government's invocation of the Emergencies Act in February 2022 amid the trucker protests "unlawful" and "unconstitutional" during the press conference.

“The protests needed to be addressed. But the government also had an obligation to comply with the law and use emergency powers as a truly last resort," CCLA lawyer Cara Zweibel said.

She added that the government will have to provide plenty of proof during the hearings to show the invocation was warranted.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and so-called “Freedom Convoy” protest organizer Tamara Lich are among those who will be called to testify later this week in a probe into the government’s invocation of the Emergencies Act earlier this year.

The list of names of all those called to testify before the Public Order Emergency Commission was released Tuesday morning, and it includes a number of politicians, protest organizers, and intelligence agency officials.

The public hearings are set to begin this Thursday in downtown Ottawa and will run to the end of November, according to the commission.
