Ottawa police Chief Peter Sloly said Wednesday that there may not be a “police solution” to end the protest against public health measures and COVID-19 vaccine mandates in the capital. He added that there are demonstrations in other Canadian cities.

“This is a national issue, not an Ottawa issue,” he said.

He also indicated that the department believes a “sizeable element” in the U.S. is involved in funding, organizing and participating in the protest in Ottawa. He said the demonstration in the capital is putting the city and officers at “great risk.”

City officials said the cost of the demonstration against COVID-19 restrictions in Ottawa is “well over” $3 million.

Ottawa’s chief administrative officer Blair Dunker said the cost was considerably more than the city’s Canada 150 celebrations, which had a price tag of $1.4 million.
