NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh called Monday for an emergency debate in the House of Commons, saying the NDP wants to hear from the government on four issues related to the trucker protests in the country and the COVID-19 pandemic. He said they want to see the government meet with impacted municipalities, and to investigate whether possible foreign interference is involved in the protests.
It comes a day after the city of Ottawa declared a state of emergency, giving it the ability to bypass normal procedures in certain situations, and hours after police dismantled one of the logistics camps truckers and their supporters were using to assemble their supply of fuel and materials.
The media availability also comes hours before a court will hear arguments in a proposed multi-million-dollar class-action lawsuit by Ottawa residents who want protesters encamped in their downtown to stop honking their horns.
Organizers of the truck convoy have vowed not to leave until policymakers meet their demands to end public health mandates tied to the COVID-19 pandemic.
