At least 17 people were killed on Monday after protesters calling for the release of jailed former president Pedro Castillo clashed with police forces.

Prime Minister Alberta Otárola said close to 2,000 protesters also carried out an "organized" and "systematic" attack against police authorities at Juliaca airport in the Puno region, adding the demonstrators tried to take over the facility.

At least another 68 people were injured and hospitalized in Juliaca, with relatives and loved ones seen outside a hospital praying for both the injured and killed.
