The mother of the 17-year-old shot and killed by police during a traffic stop on Tuesday led a tribute march in memory of her son on Thursday in the Paris suburb of Nanterre.

Thousands marched in the streets demanding justice for Nahel, as the officer involved had been put under formal investigation for voluntary homicide.

At the march, protesters railed against what they perceived as a culture of police impunity and a failure to reform law enforcement.

"Why do we want to give them [police] more weapons? There have already been some [incidents] like his before, and we don't want any more. By killing Nahel, they killed our child," local official Karima Khatim told reporters.
