A gunman suspected of shooting and killing two Swedish soccer fans and injuring a taxi driver in Brussels died on Tuesday morning after being shot by police in a café.

“A message was posted on social media by a person who claims to be the attacker. In the video, the man pretends to have acted in the name of the Islamic State and mentions the Swedish nationality of the victims as the likely motive,” Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said during a press conference on Tuesday.

The 45-year-old Tunisian suspect sought asylum in Belgium in Nov. 2019 and lived in the country illegally, according to Croo.

Belgium was hosting Sweden in a Euro 2024 qualifying soccer match on Monday evening. The match was abandoned at halftime, following the shooting.

Since, what officials have called a terrorist attack, Belgium has raised the security alert status of its capital city to the highest level, with increased police presence — particularly for Swedish people and institutions.
