New South Wales police believe a Sydney knife attack is not terror related, Commissioner Karen Webb said in a briefing on Saturday.
Officials suspect a 40-year-old man to be responsible for the incident — which left seven people dead, including the attacker — but they will wait to conduct a full investigation before confirming the suspect's identity, they said.
The attacker fatally knifed six people in a Sydney mall and was shot dead by police in Sydney's beachside suburb of Bondi on Saturday, as hundreds fled the scene, police said.
Australia has some of the world's toughest gun and knife laws, and attacks such as the one on Saturday are rare.
