Chris Covelli, spokesperson for the Lake County major crime task force, said Tuesday that the suspected gunman who opened fire on a Fourth of July parade in the Chicago suburb of Highland Park had planned the attack “for several weeks.”

Covelli said the gunman purchased the rifle legally in Illinois and that he had dressed in women’s clothing in order to conceal his identity prior to the attack.

Investigators believe the gunman fired off more than 70 rounds into the crowd as people celebrated the Independence Day holiday. Six people were killed and more than 30 people were injured in the shooting, police said. Covelli said that there is no information to suggest the shooting was “racially motivated, motivated by religion or any other protected status.”

Robert E. Crimo III, 21, remains in custody after surrendering to police. Covelli told reporters that police do not believe anyone else was involved in the attack.
