Protesters clashed with police in Lima on Thursday as demonstrators showed their support for ousted former President Pedro Castillo, whose pre-trial detention in prison was extended to 18 months.
Police fired tear gas at protesters who were shouting and throwing objects at them, demanding fresh elections.
"I narrowly escaped. They suffocated us and surrounded us," one protester said about the police.
Protesters gathered outside the jail where he was detained, holding up banners criticizing new President Dina Boluarte and calling for Congress to be shuttered.
