At least one person died in Peru on Wednesday, after new scuffles between anti-government protesters and the police erupted in the cities of Puno and Huancavelica. The clashes started when protesters threw rocks at the police and they responded with teargas canisters and gunshots, according to local reports.

During the conflict, at least one 30-year-old woman died and one person was severely wounded, while fires were set to the justice department’s building and a police station, local media said. Teargas canisters were used by authorities to disperse the protests, but the unrest persisted on Thursday with roadblocks.

The clashes mark the worst violence Peru has seen in over 20 years, as many people in poorer rural regions vent anger at the Lima political elite over inequality and rising prices, testing the copper-rich Andean nation's democratic institutions.

The protests, which have seen over 50 deaths since former president Pedro Castillo was ousted in early December, have been the lightning rod for much anger, with calls for President Dina Boluarte to resign and new elections to be held.
