Violent clashes between protesters and riot police erupted in Lima on Tuesday as Manuel Merino was sworn in as Peru's interim president, after President Martin Vizcarra was ousted by Congress a day earlier.

In downtown Lima, police fired tear gas at protesters who waved banners and signs and demanded Vizcarra's return. Dozens of protesters were seen being arrested.

Peruvian lawmakers voted overwhelmingly Monday night to remove Vizcarra from office, expressing anger over his handling of the coronavirus pandemic and citing alleged but unproven corruption allegations.

Merino, who was head of Congress, will be in office until July of next year, with elections scheduled for April.
