Peruvian politician Dina Boluarte was sworn as interim president on Wednesday, hours after Pedro Castillo was removed in an impeachment trial during a day of high political drama in the Andean nation. Boluarte, elevated from vice president, became Peru's first-ever female president following Castillo's attempt to dissolve the legislature by decree to avoid the impeachment vote, which sparked a wave of resignations by ministers and criticism from allies.

"As we all know, there has been an attempted coup d'état, an attempt pushed by Mr. Pedro Castillo, which has not found backing in the institutions of democracy and in the streets. This Congress of the Republic, per the constitutional mandate, has taken a decision and it is my duty to act accordingly. I assume the office of constitutional president of the republic, conscious of the enormous responsibility over me," Boluarte said.

Meanwhile, ousted ex-president Pedro Castillo appeared before the attorney general's anti-corruption officials, hours after he plunged the country into a constitutional crisis. Footage showed Castillo signing documents next to former prime minister and lawyer Anibal Torres at an office, sitting in front of Peruvian prosecutors.

On the streets of Lima, supporters of Castillo clashed with police outside a police station, while his critics showed up outside the Mexican embassy after it was said Castillo could seek asylum in the country.
