As wildfires continue to burn across northern Ontario, part of a devastating start to Canada’s wildfire season, Premier Doug Ford has promised as much funding as necessary to help firefighters get the blazes under control.

There were 25 out-of-control fires in the province as of June 7, with more than 20,000 hectares scorched. The premier has blamed the wildfires on campfires and lightning strikes.

Drifting smoke from the wildfires triggered special air quality advisories for large swaths of Ontario, with Environment Canada warning of high levels of air pollution.

Ford acknowledged the “major impact” of the blanket of smoke across the Greater Toronto Area Wednesday but said the province is “responding in full force.”

Shallima Maharaj looks at the impact of the wildfire smoke, while Colin D’Mello reports from Queen’s Park on the pressure on the premier.
