At the foot of Mount Semeru, damaged houses lined the side of the road on Tuesday, covered by a thick layer of now-hardened volcanic ash, four days after a deadly volcanic eruption wiped out the area.

The village of Curah Kobokan was one of the worst hit areas when Mount Semeru spewed a column of hot air into the sky on Saturday, killing at least 34 people.

Since day one, Dodik Suryadiawan has been driving on the bumpy road in his personal four-wheel drive, helping to retrieve the remains of those who perished in the disaster.

"I feel very sorry, especially when I try to imagine hot ashes falling at that time, imagine the feeling and scream of a mother who tried to calm by cuddling her child, that is very sad," the 36-year-old told Reuters on Tuesday.

He is referring to the body of a woman he found, a mother who appeared to be hugging her child.

Using heavy equipment and shovels, Dodik and fellow volunteers join forces with the government search team, formed by police, military and disaster mitigation agency, to comb through the plot of land where houses and a sand mine company used to stand.

Indonesia's Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation said on Monday there was potential for further flows of hot gas, ash and rocks.
