Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez visited the island of La Palma on Wednesday to assess the damage done so far by the erupting Cumbre Vieja volcano, saying based on discussions with the volcano response committee Pevolca, there was no sign volcanic activity would end soon.

His visit comes a day after the community of La Laguna had to evacuate, abandoning their homes after the lava took a new course on its way to Atlantic Ocean and put their homes in a probable path of destruction.

Nearly 1,200 buildings have been destroyed since the volcano began erupting Sept. 19, with about 6,700 people having evacuated from various communities.
