Drone video from Spain's Geographical and Mining Institute captured the Cumbre Vieja's volcanic cone collapsing in La Palma on Saturday in what experts say is the volcano entering a new explosive phase.
Geographers said that due to the cone growing so fast, it has not given itself time to settle the structure and in turn was having difficulty "evacuating the broken fragments of the structure," Miguel Angel Morcuende, director of the volcano response committee, said Saturday.
The ash spreading from the volcano also caused the airport to shut down, leaving people stranded and searching for other options.
