Even after destroying nearly 1,000 buildings on La Palma island in Spain, the Cumbre Vieja volcano increased its explosive power Tuesday, spewing thicker lava out of its main vent just a day after part of the crater collapsed. It has been spewing black smoke and lava for 17 days in a row since erupting Sept. 19.

Two newly opened cracks formed late last week, creating different paths for molten rock to take down the mountainside. On Sunday night the north side of the crater collapsed, with jets of lava exploding from the volcano.

Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Sunday that the government would help rebuild La Palma, where the volcanic eruption has destroyed hundreds of buildings and forced thousands to evacuate their homes.

During his third visit to La Palma since the eruption began on Sept. 19, Sanchez said the government would approve 206 million euros ($239 million) of aid funding this week.

About 6,000 people have been evacuated from homes on the island out of a population of some 83,000.
