Thick clouds of smoke and ash billowed into the air earlier Saturday as the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano in La Palma, Spain, continued. Geographers said it appeared to be entering a new stage, with the eruptions intensifying.

The volcanic cone appeared to collapse later in the day due to it growing so fast it gave no time for the structure to settle. A new smoke column was also seen due to a new lava stream and emission vent.

No injuries or deaths have been reported so far since the volcano began erupting Sept. 19, but it has prompted thousands of people to evacuate and even caused the airport in La Palma to close due to the ash moving across the island.
