"Life will be difficult:" St. Vincent volcano sends thick ash over communities far from eruption

Georgetown, a community several miles away from La Soufriere volcano on the Caribbean island of Saint Vincent, showed buildings blanketed in a layer of ash over the weekend after the volcano spectacularly erupted after decades of inactivity.

The eruption of La Soufriere on Friday pumped dark clouds of ash some 10 km into the air, prompting an evacuation of some nearby residents.

"Life will be very difficult for people within this side of the country," Bill a member of the disaster response team said, predicting things may not return to normal for a "very long time."

Meanwhile, in Barbados, about 110 miles from St. Vincent, the meteorological services agency reported intensities of ash impacting the island, with videos posted on social media showing the layers of volcanic ash coating cars and the ground.
