Mount Ruang eruption: Volcanic lightning spurs Mordor-like sky in Indonesia
Mount Ruang, a volcano located in North Sulawesi, Indonesia, erupted on Tuesday, triggering volcanic lightning and lava. The effect resulted in a Mordor-like sky, creating a fascinating and otherworldly sight.
Residents living near the volcano described the mountain's eruption as "massive" and said that "rocks started raining on us," as they waited on Wednesday for the nation's military ship to evacuate them away from the volcano.
"Fire, lightning and the grumble of the mountain. We felt it, all the windows were shaking," resident Dian Ningsih Gumunggilung said.
The eruption, which spewed lava and flows of ash clouds, prompted authorities to evacuate more than 12,000 people from Tagulandang, the nearest island from the volcano. The volcanic activity follows a series of eruptions earlier in April that also forced hundreds of people to evacuate, causing damage to some homes and forcing an airport to close.
