The Shiveluch volcano in Russia’s far eastern region erupted early Tuesday, spewing a massive cloud of ash into the sky that blotted out the sun and smothered villages in grey volcanic dust.

"You can't see anything outside. It's like night," one resident said while filming her backyard at 9 a.m. as an ash cloud rained down.

The drifts of grey ash were as deep as 8.5 centimetres in some towns in the eastern Kamchatka peninsula — the most volcanic fallout Russia has seen in 60 years.

There were no immediate reports of casualties, though scientists said the volcano was still erupting 15 hours after the start of the eruption.
